Definitions
Parallel Parlor - A milking parlor where the cows stand side by side facing directly away from the operators. The udders are accessed between the rear legs.
Herringbone Parlor - A milking parlor where the cows are standing in a angled position but still facing away from the operators. This is almost the same as a parallel parlor but the cows are just turned a little.
Rotary Parlor- Often called the Carousel. Cows are moved by an automated system shaped like a carousel. This type of parlor only requires 3 operators but is best suited for large milking operations.
Mastitis - the inflammation of the mammary gland caused by external trauma or internal infections.
Milking Cluster - Device attached to teats to draw milk from the udder. These are the milkers.
Pasteurization - Milk (but used in many other industries as well) is heated to a specific temperature for a set amount of time to kill bacteria and make the milk safe for human consumption.
Hominy - Corn that has been placed into lye and then washed to remove the shell.
Brewer's Grain - Grain used to make beer that is dried and sold as feed. It is very high in protein.
Toxin Neutralizer - A feed additive that binds toxins posed from mold. This makes the animal able to digest certain toxins and it keeps those toxins out of the milk.
Silage - Grass that has been cut and harvested and stored without drying so that microorganisms living in the grass will allow for fermentation.
Artificial Insemination - The humane implantation of seamen directly into the uterus.
Estrus - Often referred to as Heat. Period of time during the cycle that an animal becomes receptive to impregnation.
Palpate - A procedure done to determine if an animal is pregnant or not.
Sire - Male parent
Penicillin - a medication used to treat infections
Draxxin - a medicated used to treat respiratory infections in cattle that are not producing milk.
